Mondi Scoop Up Awards
16 January 2026
The Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP) continued its three-part series on the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), with Circular Analytics’ Charlotte Neumair and Lina Wimmer outlining the practical steps companies must take to comply.
The session emphasised that obligations differ across five economic operators—supplier, manufacturer, producer, importer, and distributors – with importers facing strict requirements to ensure packaging conforms to Articles 5–12. Speakers highlighted the importance of conformity assessments, technical documentation, and declarations of conformity, describing the latter as the “ticket for EU market access.”
Key deadlines include substance restrictions from August 2026, labelling and compostability rules from February 2028, and recyclability and recycled-content thresholds from January 2030.
Neumair urged proactive compliance, stressing that sustainability is now a market access requirement. Accurate packaging data and digital systems will be critical, with Part 3 of the series in early 2026 set to explore data management and digitalisation.
