Global Compostable Packaging Rules Tighten

21 May 2026

Global compostable packaging rules tighten ahead of the 2026 compliance deadline. Regulators across Europe, North America and Asia are preparing to enforce significantly stricter compostable‑packaging requirements by 2026, marking one of the most substantial shifts in sustainable‑packaging law to date. Brands selling compostable products will be required to meet recognised third‑party standards—EN 13432 in the EU and ASTM D6400/BPI in the U.S. and Canada—alongside mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) registration in key markets.

The changes follow a wave of legislation passed between 2021 and 2024, including the EU’s expanded Single‑Use Plastics Directive, France and Germany’s strengthened EPR schemes, and new U.S. state‑level rules governing compostability claims and labelling. From 2026, packaging marketed as compostable must be certified, traceable, correctly labelled and registered with national systems such as Germany’s LUCID or France’s Triman framework.

With more than 50 countries set to enforce EPR obligations by 2026, brands are being urged to finalise certification, update packaging artwork and complete registration processes well ahead of the deadline to maintain market access and consumer trust.
