Rethinking Coffee Packaging

4 May 2025

In 2022, Delica AG, belonging to the group Migros Industries AG, a leader in Swiss retail, approached Constantia Flexibles with a bold vision: to develop a recyclable-ready high-barrier laminate for their coffee packaging. The goal was ambitious: to create a solution that maintained the freshness and quality of ground coffee and beans while being compatible with existing packaging machines.

In early 2023, Constantia launched trials with EcoVerHighPlus, a mono PP laminate with high barrier properties. Initial results were promising, and Migros conducted shelf-life tests and coffee tastings to evaluate performance.

After months of development and testing, the transition to mono PP packaging became a reality. By May 2024, Delica AG, the manufacturing plant, officially began shifting the first Café Royal SKUs to the new specification. In October 2024, commercial production started at Constantia Pirk,

The following month, Constantia delivered the first commercial batch to one production site of Delica AG, part of the Migros Industries AG, seamlessly packed its first 500g coffee bean packs without requiring significant modifications to its packaging line. Soon after, the new packaging was awarded a certificate for recycling from Interseroh, verifying compliance with DIN 13430 standards.

By mid-December 2024, Migros introduced the new Café Royal recyclable-ready softbags to consumers, proving that sustainability and premium quality can go hand in hand.
